    Keynote Session – Anastasia Diamond-Ortiz

How does a library decide when to offer something new? What about tweaking existing collections and services? Can a library have it all figured out? Think again. We will discuss data driven innovation processes and decision-making informed by design thinking and how these ideas can benefit the library. Bring a burning question about your library's services or community for discussion.

Anastasia Diamond-Ortiz is a librarian and Director of Strategy and Innovation at Cleveland Public Library focused on helping librarians become more data literate and understand the impact of data on libraries. She has presented on data visualization and measuring outcomes in public libraries. Her most recent project is coordinating Open Cleveland, a Code for America brigade working to promote open government in Cleveland. She can be found on twitter @anastasia_do.

Novel-Ties: Classics and Comics in the Classroom

With so much focus on technology these days, we’re going back to the books to look at how literature can be used in the classroom in innovative ways. We’ll examine the more “traditional” novel and get the inside story from a 2015 Newbery Committee member. We’ll also look at the graphic novel and how its popularity with students can be leveraged in the classroom to enhance reading instruction and to provide new opportunities to engage with text. In addition, we’ll take some time for small group discussions on topics of interest to CMC librarians. The day will conclude with a brief tour of the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum.

Cultivating Creators: Copyright in the Information Literacy Classroom

Description: Information literacy and scholarly communication librarians are working together to create avenues for increased collaboration in the classroom. The Framework for Information Literacy and the Intersections of Scholarly Communication and Information Literacy white paper, plus continuing task force work within ACRL, demonstrates progress towards aligning scholarly communication education within undergraduate and graduate student information literacy outreach. This webcast will focus on how librarians can integrate copyright into the classroom with undergraduate and graduate students to raise awareness of not only ethically using others’ work, but also how to consider their rights and responsibilities as creators and copyright holders of their own work.

    Learning Outcomes:

    • Share strategies for discussing copyright with students in order to build instructional literacy for librarians.
    • Contextualize copyright and Creative Commons licenses within information literacy instruction in order to increase professional knowledge about scholarly communication.
    • Raise awareness of different options for sharing scholarship and creative activity among librarians in order to close the loop in information literacy instruction.

Presenter(s): Stephanie Davis-Kahl, Scholarly Communications Librarian/Associate Professor, Illinois Wesleyan University; Molly Keener, Scholarly Communication Librarian, Wake Forest University

Beyond Worksheets: Using Instructional Technologies for Authentic Assessment of Student Learning
    April 7, 2015
    11 a.m. Pacific | 12:00 p.m. Mountain | 1:00 p.m. Central | 2:00 p.m. Eastern

Description: Academic librarians are no strangers to assessment, but figuring out how to implement authentic assessment can be tricky. We all want our instruction to help students, but how do we know if they are actually learning? Better yet, how can we make this process enjoyable for both the educators (that’s us!) and the students? This webcast will discuss the importance of designing authentic learning activities tied to information literacy learning outcomes. The presenter will highlight a number of instructional technologies that provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate learning while engaging in higher-order skills such as critical thinking, synthesis, and analysis of information. Webcast participants will engage in analysis of several tech tools and assessment techniques for use in varied instructional scenarios, including one-time class sessions, trainings, and workshops. Most of the techniques discussed will be applicable for assessing students both in-person and online. Each participant will receive an instructional technologies evaluation form that can be used to analyze the technologies highlighted in the session for use in their own teaching. This interactive webcast will share successful and easy to implement authentic assessment techniques and tools that will have students showing off their skills in no time.

    Learning Outcomes:

    • Participants will describe the characteristics of authentic assessment in order to successfully measure students’ information literacy skills.
    • Participants will compare and contrast instructional technologies in order to determine their usefulness for measuring student learning.
    • Participants will discuss strategies for engaging students in order to maximize participation levels in library instruction sessions.
