What You Need to Know About AI Right Now: Practical Guidance for Academic Librarians

Program Description:

Explore how Generative AI can impact academic libraries through this hands-on workshop. Designed for academic librarians—this session provides practical approaches to understanding and using various AI tools in different library settings. Participants will:

  • Use and examine different AI models like ChatGPT, Claude, and Mixtral.
  • Describe and debate concerns about Generative AI like intellectual property, interpretability, and data provenance.
  • Practice a variety of different prompt engineering techniques.
  • Brainstorm and explore innovative AI applications for libraries.

Whether an AI novice or expert, this workshop aims to enable participants to interrogate and use AI in new and interesting ways.

Participants are asked to bring a computer or device they can work on during the workshop.

Workshop Facilitators

Michael Flierl

Michael Flierl is an Associate Professor and Student Learning Librarian at The Ohio State University. Michael has recently explored dual-use foundational AI models from an information literacy lens—consulting on AI for the Department of Defense and presenting on AI to the Ohio State University’s College of Medicine, Columbus City Schools, and the city of Charlotte, NC. His most recent work in the area, "Artificial Intelligence and Information Literacy: Hazards and Opportunities," was presented at the 2023 European Conference on Information Literacy and published in the conference proceedings, Information Experience and Information Literacy. Michael is currently a Fellow at the Institute for Information Literacy at Purdue and the Special Issues Editor for Reference Services Review.

Michelle Kraft


Michelle Kraft

Michelle Kraft is the Library Director at the Floyd D. Loop Alumni Library providing library resources and services to the Cleveland Clinic Health System. Throughout her career Michelle’s interest and research focus has been on the intersection of technology and medical librarianship. As the Co-Lead Editor of the Journal of the Medical Library Association, she created one of the first policies among library journals on the use of generative AI for article submission. She works with colleagues at the Cleveland Clinic and has spoken on the implications on the usage of AI in an academic medical center. Recently she was a panelist on the Medical Library Association’s information summit, "Why AI? Transforming the Health Information Profession."


Lorien Anderson

Lorien Anderson is a Reference and Instruction Librarian at Columbus State Community College specializing in information literacy instruction. A focus of their work is to bring critical information literacy perspectives to classroom conversations about current and emerging issues such as AI. They hold an MA in English Literature from Ohio University and an MLIS from Kent State University.


Stefanie Hilles

Stefanie Hilles is the Arts and Humanities Librarian at Wertz Art and Architecture Library at Miami University, where she liaisons to the art, architecture and interior design, and theatre departments, manages their collections, and instructs information literacy sessions. Previous to her role at Miami, Stefanie was the Library and Archives Manager at the Akron Art Museum, an Associate Lecturer in Art History at the University of Akron, and Part-time Faculty in Art History at Kent State University. She holds an M.A. in Art History from Case Western Reserve University and an M.L.I.S. from Kent State. She has presented at the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA), the Art Libraries Society of the United Kingdom and Ireland (ARLIS/UK & Ireland), the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), the Library Instruction and Information Literacy Conference (LOEX), and the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS), among others, and has been published in Art Libraries Journal, Art Documentation, and Public Services Quarterly.


Roger Justus

Roger Justus is the Data Services Librarian at Miami University (Ohio) where he serves as liaison to the Computer Science and Software Engineering; Electrical and Computer Engineering; Information Systems & Analytics; Mathematics; and Statistics, as well as working with GIS and other technologies. He received his MLS from the University of Tennessee Knoxville. Research interests include, digital humanities and scholarship, Data Management and Open Science, as well as the use of technologies such as GIS and AI to support students and researchers.
