Explore how Generative AI can impact academic libraries through this hands-on workshop. Designed for academic librarians—this session provides practical approaches to understanding and using various AI tools in different library settings. Participants will:

Michael FlierlMichael Flierl is an Associate Professor and Student Learning Librarian at The Ohio State University. Michael has recently explored dual-use foundational AI models from an information literacy lens—consulting on AI for the Department of Defense and presenting on AI to the Ohio State University’s College of Medicine, Columbus City Schools, and the city of Charlotte, NC. His most recent work in the area, "Artificial Intelligence and Information Literacy: Hazards and Opportunities," was presented at the 2023 European Conference on Information Literacy and published in the conference proceedings, Information Experience and Information Literacy. Michael is currently a Fellow at the Institute for Information Literacy at Purdue and the Special Issues Editor for Reference Services Review. |
Anita SlackAnita J. Slack is the Life and Health Sciences Librarian and Assistant Professor at Kent State University Libraries. In this role, she serves as the subject specialist to the Nursing, Public Health, Biological Sciences, and Biomedical Sciences departments. Her research interests include information literacy instruction, evidence-based practice in Nursing, open educational resources and affordable learning, and faculty/librarian collaboration in the health sciences. She holds a BA, MA, and MLIS from Kent State University. Prior to Kent State, she has served as liaison librarian to Nursing at Ashland University and Capital University. Her research interests include information literacy instruction, evidence-based practice in Nursing, open educational resources and affordable learning, and the intersection of the personal and the professional in librarianship. |
Lorien AndersonLorien Anderson is a Reference and Instruction Librarian at Columbus State Community College specializing in information literacy instruction. A focus of their work is to bring critical information literacy perspectives to classroom conversations about current and emerging issues such as AI. They hold an MA in English Literature from Ohio University and an MLIS from Kent State University. |
Stefanie HillesStefanie Hilles is the Arts and Humanities Librarian at Wertz Art and Architecture Library at Miami University, where she liaisons to the art, architecture and interior design, and theatre departments, manages their collections, and instructs information literacy sessions. Previous to her role at Miami, Stefanie was the Library and Archives Manager at the Akron Art Museum, an Associate Lecturer in Art History at the University of Akron, and Part-time Faculty in Art History at Kent State University. She holds an M.A. in Art History from Case Western Reserve University and an M.L.I.S. from Kent State. She has presented at the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA), the Art Libraries Society of the United Kingdom and Ireland (ARLIS/UK & Ireland), the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), the Library Instruction and Information Literacy Conference (LOEX), and the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS), among others, and has been published in Art Libraries Journal, Art Documentation, and Public Services Quarterly. |
Roger JustusRoger Justus is the Data Services Librarian at Miami University (Ohio) where he serves as liaison to the Computer Science and Software Engineering; Electrical and Computer Engineering; Information Systems & Analytics; Mathematics; and Statistics, as well as working with GIS and other technologies. He received his MLS from the University of Tennessee Knoxville. Research interests include, digital humanities and scholarship, Data Management and Open Science, as well as the use of technologies such as GIS and AI to support students and researchers. |
