Proposals

The Academic Library Association of Ohio (ALAO) conference planning committee invites you to submit proposals for the 45th Annual Conference, Libraries Speak Up! Advocate. Collaborate. Educate., which will highlight the myriad ways we respectfully, effectively, and equitably speak up for our profession, our libraries, and our patrons through advocacy, collaboration, and education. All facets of the library community are invited to submit a presentation from public and technical services to librarians, staff, and students.

  • Conference Date: October 18, 2019
  • Conference Location: Nationwide Hotel & Conference Center in Columbus, Ohio
  • Submission Deadline:  The submission deadline has now closed.


We encourage thoughtful, timely proposals on any topic related to the theme. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Successful or innovative collaborations 
  • Advocacy efforts for our patrons, our libraries, and the profession 
  • Advocating for social justice and equity 
  • Demonstrating value and telling our story 
  • Outreach, including outreach to marginalized groups 
  • Library instruction and information literacy 
  • Advocacy, collaboration, or innovation in collections work 
  • Marketing and communications

All presenters are responsible for their own registration and travel costs.

Guidelines For Submissions of Presentations And Poster Sessions

  • Content, relevance to conference theme, & overall appeal are key.
  • Proposals should be concise, descriptive, and clearly written.
  • Proposals are blind, peer-reviewed.
  • Multiple submission of presentation and poster proposals are allowed
    • No more than two (either two presentations or one presentation and one poster) will be included in the final program.
  • You will be contacted regarding your AV/technology requirements if your proposal is accepted.

Proposal Elements

One proposal form will be used for all presentation types:

  • 45-minute panel presentation
  • Breakout Session
  • Poster Session 
  • Roundtable 

Breakout Sessions and Panel Guidelines:

Presentations will be 45 minutes in length.

Include the following:

  • Title: 50 word limit

  • Abstract: 200 word limit

  • Presenter Bio(s): 100 word limit

  • Primary audience

  • Keywords to describe the content

  • Learning outcomes (what will attendees learn in the session)

Exclude the name of your institution, department, and any personal names. If you include this identifying information, your proposal may not receive further consideration.

Poster Guidelines: 

Include the following:

  • Title: 50 word limit
  • Abstract: 200 word limit
  • Presenter Bio(s): 100 word limit
  • Keywords to describe the content

  • Learning outcomes (what will attendees learn in the session)

Exclude the name of your institution, department, and any personal names. If you include this identifying information, your proposal may not receive further consideration.

Roundtable Guidelines: 

Include the following:

  • Title: 50 word limit

  • Abstract: 200 word limit

  • Presenter Bio(s): 100 word limit

  • Primary audience

  • Keywords to describe the content

  • In lieu of learning outcomes, please list 3 discussion questions you plan to use during the roundtable.

Exclude the name of your institution, department, and any personal names. If you include this identifying information, your proposal may not receive further consideration.

All those accepted as a presenter are responsible for their own registration and travel costs. Please print a copy of the completed form for your records before submitting. Community Agreements

The conference planners seek to create a space for respectful dialogue and debate about critical issues. Upon registration, attendees will be asked to review and accept a list of community agreements. Conference planners will actively strive to create spaces in which multiple perspectives can be heard and no one voice dominates.

About ALAO

The Academic Library Association of Ohio (ALAO) is a chapter of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). ALAO exists to develop, promote, and improve library and information services in Ohio’s higher education community, to advance the interests of academic librarianship and the personnel of academic libraries, and to provide leadership and advocacy for the educational and policy concerns of the academic library community in Ohio.

Sustainability

  • We encourage attendees to carpool to and from the conference to reduce pollution.
  • We encourage attendees to bring their own refillable water bottles and coffee mugs to the conference to reduce waste.
  • The committee will be very intentional about what we choose to print. As such, stay tuned for details about electronic conference programs, evaluations and more.
