Interest Groups
Collection Management Interest Group
Purpose
The purpose of the Collection Management Interest Group is to provide a forum for ALAO members to identify and discuss collection management issues, to share information, and to explore avenues of cooperation.
Goals
- Promote discussion on topics relevant to collection management and development in academic libraries;
- Promote networking and the exchange of ideas and expertise among academic library staff interested in collection management and development issues; and
- Support continuing education activities in the areas of collection management and development.
Objectives
- Hold an annual meeting that includes a program or roundtable discussion.
- Regularly contribute items to the ALAO newsletter on issues of concern to the interest group members.
- Sponsor or co-sponsor programs or conference sessions related to collection management and development.
Membership
ALAO members who have expressed an interest in collection management and development issues.

Curriculum Materials Center Interest Group
Purpose
The purpose of the Curriculum Materials Center Interest Group is to provide an opportunity at a statewide level for interested CMC and personnel to meet and exchange information.
Goals
- Address mutual issues or problems related to Curriculum Materials Centers that can be discussed in a group setting for the purpose of generating ideas and solutions.
- Keep CMC personnel abreast of current curriculum standards on the state and national levels.
- Share ideas and information regarding Curriculum Materials Centers by sponsoring or co-sponsoring programs.
- Provide for networking between Curriculum Materials Centers through the publication of a directory of Curriculum Materials Centers, the CMCIG webpage, and utilizing the CMCIG listserv for information sharing and discussions.
- Promote the interest of Curriculum Materials Centers and CMC personnel through contributions to the ALAO Newsletter and web page.
- Support continued professional development of CMC personnel to insure high standards of service to education programs in the state (Ohio).
Objectives
To be determined annually by the Chair of the Interest Group in consultation with the coordinating committee and interest group members.
Membership
The Interest Group will consist of ALAO members who have expressed an interest in curriculum materials. This may include, but is not limited to, CMC librarians, education librarians, curriculum librarians, CMC faculty, personnel, and support staff.
Elections
The Chair will be elected each spring from the interest group membership.

Distance Learning Interest Group
Purpose
Provide a statewide forum for library staff interested in and/or involved with distance learning services.
Goals
- Discuss topics relevant to library support for distance learners;
- Share information and provide networking opportunities by sponsoring and co-sponsoring programs;
- Promote library involvement with distance learning programs on Ohio campuses;
- Explore opportunities for cooperation between ALAO and OLN, the Ohio Learning Network; and
- Promote information exchange with the ACRL Distance Learning Section.
Objectives
- Hold an annual meeting that includes either a program or a roundtable discussion;
- Contribute, when appropriate, to the ALAO Newsletter on topics relevant to the group's membership; and
- Create and maintain a webpage that provides information about academic library services in Ohio that support distance learning programs.
Membership
ALAO members who have expressed an interest in issues relating to library services for distance learning.

Instruction Interest Group
Purpose
The purpose of the Instruction Interest Group of ALAO is to provide on a statewide level a forum for library staff from diverse academic institutions who are involved in library instruction.
Goals
- Discuss common issues and concerns in the areas of library instruction
- Share expertise and resources of programs already established in Ohio's academic libraries.
- Support library instruction continuing education activities
- Promote the instructional role of academic libraries
Objectives
- Hold a program and business meeting annually, either in conjunction with the association's annual conference or at another time convenient to Interest Group members.
- Contribute on a regular basis items concerning the IIG to the ALAO Newsletter.
- Encourage communication among librarians involved in library instruction through submissions to the ALAO Newsletter, electronic discussion list and/or Instruction Clearinghouse.
Membership
Any ALAO member who is interested in library instruction and information literacy is welcome to participate in the Instruction Interest Group.
Organizational Structure
- Two co-chairs, serving staggered two-year terms.
- One Instruction Clearinghouse Coordinator, serving a two-year term.
- Workshop planning committee.
- A coordinating committee is formed annually by a call for volunteers in the ALAO Newsletter and electronic discussion lists. The co-chairs are either elected or selected by affirmation from among those committee members. The Clearinghouse Coordinator may be chosen by the same method or by a separate call for volunteers. The ALAO President appoints these individuals, and terms of office begin at the Annual Leadership Retreat.

Support Staff Interest Group
Purpose
The purpose of the Academic Library Association of Ohio Support Staff Interest Group (SSIG) is to identify issues and areas of mutual concern among support staff and to develop communication for the purpose of resource sharing and continuing education.
Goals
- Encourage the participation of all colleagues within the profession to achieve the common goal of quality service.
- Foster positive working relationships among support staff at all levels in academic libraries.
- Develop a professional identity for support positions and enhance the professional atmosphere within academic libraries.
- Promote cohesiveness among support staff statewide.
- Promote the exchange of ideas among individuals with similar responsibilities in academic libraries.
Objectives
- The SSIG shall sponsor or co-sponsor in conjunction with ALAO, programs of particular interest to support staff but not limited to support staff.
- The SSIG will hold a fall business meeting at the annual ALAO conference or at the pre-conference, if one is sponsored by SSIG. In addition to the fall pre-conference held every few years, SSIG may sponsor an annual spring or summer workshop which includes a business meeting as well as the program.
- The SSIG Chair or other SSIG representative will regularly contribute information to the ALAO newsletter.
- The SSIG Chair will address the ALAO membership asking for support from all the members, particularly library directors, for support staff personnel to attend meetings, and to increase awareness among support staff of ALAO SSIG.
- Identify at least one SSIG member to be appointed to the ALAO Program Committee to aid in providing programs of interest to all segments of the ALAO membership and to secure a vital role for the SSIG in ALAO.
- If a suitable candidate is found, one SSIG member may be selected for nomination for the ALAO Distinguished Service Award which is presented at the annual fall conference. Written recognition of nomination for the award will be presented to the nominee.
- Continue the Support Staff Issues & Concerns Committee to look into issues and concerns of support staff.
- Continue our ongoing use of the online network of communication among ALAO SSIG members. This would be to publicize our activities and share resources. We will maintain our web presence.
- Plan to hold either a pre-conference or a workshop each year.
- Provide support for the Ohio Library Support Staff Institute.
Membership
Membership in ALAO is required for membership in the SSIG.
Organizational Structure
- The Chairperson will report SSIG activities, concerns, etc. to the ALAO Executive Board. The Chair will attend ALAO Board meetings (four per year) and the annual retreat. The Chairperson will serve as Chair of the SSIG Program Planning Committee and preside over the meetings.
- The Secretary/Chair-Elect of SSIG will be elected annually, will take minutes at all the meetings and will preside in the absence of the elected Chairperson. Further the Chair-Elect serves as the Chair of the SSIG Issues & Concerns Committee.
- The Past-Chair will provide a slate of at least two candidates (if possible) for Secretary/Chair-Elect.
- If only one person agrees to run for Secretary/Chair-Elect, the single candidate will be affirmed.
- The year-round standing committees for the SSIG will consist of, but are not limited to, the SSIG Program Planning Committee and the SSIG Issues & Concerns Committee. Committee membership is open to any current member of ALAO, and the term is for one year but is renewable. Service time will be from one annual ALAO conference until the next.
- The SSIG Program Planning Committee (PPC) will convene to plan workshops, pre-conferences (when sponsored by the SSIG), and other events of the SSIG.
- The SSIG Issues & Concerns Committee (ICC) will take up current issues or concerns to academic library support staff who are members of ALAO. The SSIG ICC will be a voice for support staff issues in Ohio and present these issues to the SSIG membership at the annual business meeting held during the annual ALAO Conference. This committee will provide input to the SSIG PPC.
- Subcommittees may be appointed as they are needed
Nominations And Elections
- The Past-Chair will provide a slate of at least two candidates (if possible) for Secretary/Chair-Elect.
- If only one person agrees to run for Secretary/Co-Chair, the single candidate will be affirmed.
- The largest number of votes collected will determine the election. The Past-Chair will verify and announce the results in the ALAO newsletter. Only ALAO members are eligible to vote in the SSIG elections.
- Voting on special issues will be held as needed during the fall or spring/summer business meetings.
- If the office of the Chairperson is vacated prior to the expiration of a term, the Secretary/Chair-Elect will assume all duties of the Chairperson. An interim Secretary will be appointed to fill the term until the regular election.
- If the office of Secretary/Chair-Elect is vacated prior to the expiration of a term, the Chairperson will appoint someone to fill the office until the regular elections are held.
Spring/Summer Workshop And Preconference Programs
- These programs are planned by the SSIG Program Planning Committee through their periodic meetings and e-mail communication.
- The SSIG’s annual workshop and the pre-conference, if held, will include a business meeting in addition to the program.
- The concept of regional workshops in cooperation with regional consortia and all types of libraries should continue so that more SSIG members or potential members can easily participate.
Awards
ALAO and the Support Staff Interest Group sponsor two annual awards for support staff members and supporters of support staff in the state of Ohio.

Technical, Electronic, and Digital Services Interest Group
Purpose
The purpose of the ALAO Technical, Electronic, and Digital Services Interest Group is to provide a forum for discussion for ALAO members who are interested in technical services.
Goals
- Reach out to all levels of staff in academic library technical services.
- Provide a forum for networking and discussion of technical services related issues in acquisitions, cataloging, metadata, preservation, serials, and related technology.
Objectives
- Meet in connection with the annual conference.
- Hold an annual workshop on an area of interest to technical services librarians and support staff.
- Contribute to the ALAO Newsletter when appropriate.
- Administer the "Teddy Award."
Membership
Technical services librarians and support staff in Ohio academic and other libraries, who are members of ALAO, may become members of TEDSIG. Officers are appointed at the annual business meeting.
