The 33rd Annual National Library Legislative Day will take place May 1 & 2, 2007 in Washington, D.C. On Tuesday, May 1, at the Holiday Inn on the Hill, participants will be briefed on current issues pertinent to our libraries and the patrons we serve, as well as effective ways to communicate with members of Congress. On Wednesday, May 2 participants will meet with members of Congress (or their legislative aides) in their Washington offices. This is an important chance to make a positive impact on libraries across the country. Last year, over 525 library supporters from 47 states participated.
Each year, the ALAO Board funds a travel award to a current ALAO Legislative Advocate to cover the expenses of participating in this event. To apply, simply send a letter (or email message) of interest to Cindy Kristof (ckristof@kent.edu) at Kent State University Libraries & Media Services, P.O. Box 5190, Kent, OH 44242-0001. Please include in your letter a statement of interest along with a brief description of any advocacy experience you've had, either through ALAO or other organizations. Also include the name and contact information of a reference who is familiar with your advocacy interest and efforts. If you have limited experience but have the interest in learning more about legislative advocacy, you are encouraged to apply.
The deadline for application will be Thursday, February 22, 2007. Travel arrangements will be made by members of the Government Relations Team. For more information, see http://www.ala.org/ala/washoff/washevents/nlld/nlld2007.htm or contact any member of the Government Relations Team.

Curriculum Materials Center Interest Group
CMIG Sponsors Session about Graphic Novels at Conference
The Curriculum Materials Center Interest Group sponsored a session at the 32nd Annual ALAO Conference held on Friday, November 3, 2006 , at the Crowne Plaza Quaker Square in Akron . Our workshop was entitled Graphic Novels , and featured nationally recognized speaker Michael Pawuk of the Brooklyn Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library . Michael discussed the differences between graphic novels, comic books, and standard trade books, as well as offering tips on how to decide if a book belongs in a collection, the major publishers and what kinds of books they publish, and Japanese Manga. He also distributed a number of handouts to session attendees and awarded several door prizes, which were greatly appreciated by the recipients.
In addition to the workshop, the CMCIG also sponsored an Interest Group table at the conference. Conference attendees could pick up information about the CMCIG and express their interest in getting involved in ALAO.
Next on the agenda for the CMCIG is planning for the Spring 2007 workshop. The theme of the workshop will be collection development, and we will cover various aspects of the topic as it relates to curriculum centers. Ideas and suggestions for the workshop should be addressed to one of the members of the coordinating committee or posted on the CMCIG listserv.
Distance Learning Interest Group
The Distance Learning Interest Group was proud to sponsor Betsy Blankenship, Scott Savage, and Donald Reams at the 32nd ALAO Annual Conference, where they kept a full house engrossed in their presentation, Upsetting the Applecart: What Happens When Your Lecture Class Goes Online. Quotes from those attending included, "This presentation was funny and generated a lot of great ideas." Thank you Betsy, Scott, and Donald for sharing your good and bad experiences relative to traditional instruction classes infused with newly required online components.
The Distance Learning Interest Group also sponsored an informational table at the annual conference. Kathryn Venditti and Melanie Smith, with help from Kristen Arbutiski staffed the table. We focused on informing conference attendees of the Distance Learner Interest Group focus and mission, while trying to persuade them with our magnetic personalities to join our cause. Excellent results were gathered from an informal survey we bribed attendees to complete. This survey will be used to finalize our plans for the Distance Learner Interest Group Workshop. Topping the list of desired topics include: Web tutorials, best practices, distance learner assessment, and distance learning program assessment. We will be working earnestly to complete our spring workshop plans and the accompanying media blitz.
The Distance Learning Interest Group has enjoyed great assistance this year from Kristen Arbutiski, Pat Antonelli, and Christina Bonner. Kathryn Venditti, our super leader, has tirelessly and most times single-handedly, kept this interest group afloat. My thanks for each and every person who has helped this new interest group find footing and learn to grow.
Instruction Interest Group
IIG: The Laptop Dinner: UC's Libraries' Online Gaming Tutorial
Approximately 125 attendees participated in UC Libraries' Gaming Tutorial presentation. Ted Baldwin, Heather Maloney, Debbie Tenofsky, Olga Hart, and Stephena Harmony shared the Herculean task undertaken to design, develop, and deliver a Gaming tutorial for their campus. From the creation of the working group to the investigation of gaming technology to the hours spent and lessons learned, the presenters shared the lessons learned and the success that keeps them moving forward. It was the consensus of the presenters that while this was a huge undertaking, one of the greatest benefits was the on-campus workshop and the collaboration that the project showcased.

One Insider's View of Library Leadership Ohio
Library Leadership Ohio (LLO) is one of those things that many people have heard about, but no one really knows what it is. Many of the past participants are reluctant to talk too much about it. For one reason, it can be a very personal experience. " It was great week," they will say, " and the food was amazing!" I had the opportunity to attend LLO this year and would like to convey its importance to me and lobby for its continued existence.
Originally established in 1993 by the Cleveland Area Metropolitan Library System (CAMLS), the institute fell under the auspices of the newly-created NEO-RLS this year. Terri Pasadyn (formerly of CAMLS) played a pivotal role in bringing the 2006 institute to fruition. Terri has described LLO as a unique blending of purpose, place, and people, and this description is appropriate.
The stated purpose is to develop the talents of emerging library leaders, but this statement leaves out the fact that LLO is an unsurpassed opportunity for in-depth introspection, frank discussion, and unprecedented interaction among colleagues and established leaders in the Ohio library community. Many in the LLO Class of 2006 expressed how lucky they felt to have the luxury of a week -- a week! -- to really look at themselves, their strengths, and their weaknesses, and to learn from some of the luminaries of the profession.
The place, The Inn at Honey Run in Millersburg, is truly an oasis. Personally, I kept comparing it to a Zen retreat (although be careful not to make the skunks mad...but I digress).
Finally, the people. The facilitators Becky Schreiber and John Shannon truly know what they're doing. Through carefully-focused activities and thoughtful teaching, they opened my eyes to a number of topics that I'm still working through. The mentors were invaluable and gave me the swift kick in the mind-set that I needed. (Thanks, Tim and Theresa!) My fellow participants were honest and forthright, and provided valuable insights. The mentors, the facilitators, and the participants coming together in that one place with that shared purpose was a powerful thing.
Just to be clear, LLO doesn't make leaders. One doesn't go into the institute a follower and come out a leader. It's not an assembly-line process. LLO allows the participants to better understand their strengths, shortcomings, and fears, and then provides tools with which to begin to build on those strengths as well as overcome those barriers. It's a progression from not even knowing you don't know something to having an awareness of and the ability to improve areas that require attention. Becoming a leader is a process, not a goal. When one breaks out of the attitude of being a follower, you begin walking the path to becoming a leader. Granted, it's a rocky road and there's no guarantee you won't backslide. But the rewards of seeing your ideas put into action and of helping others realize their potential for growth...that is priceless.
I encourage the entire Ohio library community and all interested stakeholders to join together and support the continuing tradition of this biennial institute. It is an incomparable experience for both the participants and the mentors. Ohio can be proud of being able to offer this kind of retreat to foster future library leaders. And the food really is spectacular!
Miami Libraries to House Center for Writing Excellence
In an effort to enhance undergraduate composition skills and better prepare students for the writing they will do after graduation, two Miami University alumni have donated $10.5 million toward the creation of a new writing center. The facility will be located in the newly renovated King Library.
The center, which aspires to make Miami University the best institution in the country devoted to the teaching of writing, will be named the Roger and Joyce Howe Center for Writing Excellence. It is supported by a $10.5 million gift from Cincinnati natives and 1957 Miami graduates Roger and Joyce Howe.
The center is intended to benefit all Miami students, regardless of major, and will offer individual assistance with writing and work with faculty to evaluate writing assignments.
Housing the writing center in the library aims to create an opportunity for collaboration between librarians and writing center staff to assist students through all stages of the writing process, from brainstorming to research to the final edit.
Dean and University Librarian Judith A. Sessions sees the new center as a strategic partnership for Miami students. " Writing and information literacy are fundamentally interconnected in the work of undergraduates," Sessions said. "We hope that the new Center for Writing Excellence will allow for collaboration while helping to improve student writing skills and information literacy proficiencies such as seeking, evaluating and citing research information."
The Roger and Joyce Howe Center for Writing Excellence is set to open in 2007.

Lakeland Librarians Present at OATYC on Information Literacy Assignment Templates
Lakeland librarians Kate Kendall and Tom Hyland recently gave a presentation at the OATYC Annual Conference 2006 at Hocking College in Nelsonville , Ohio . Their presentation, Tools of the Trade: Designing Templates to Teach a General Education Outcome, reviewed the small assignments that Lakeland reference librarians have created to address the Information Literacy General Education Outcome (IL GEO). These assignments are intended to be used alone or incorporated into existing assignments so that instructors across the curriculum can teach Information Literacy skills.
Another major point of their presentation was the process of exposing the faculty to the IL GEO through a series of Teaching Information Literacy workshops. Through these workshops, the librarians introduced the concept of Information Literacy to the faculty and encouraged greater collaboration between librarians and faculty through Information Literacy instruction, the Liaison program, assignment design, and collection development.

Retirement:
Danielle Clarke, Public Services Librarian and Coordinator of Information Literacy at Ohio Wesleyan University, will retire in January 2007. She has worked in Beeghly Library since January 1996. Her duties included being the liaison to four academic departments: Education, English, Journalism, and Theatre/Dance. She attended the Ohio Immersion in 2000 and coordinated the Mellon Grant on the OWU campus for " integrating information literacy into the curriculum " which was awarded to the Five Colleges of Ohio .
Before moving to Delaware, Ohio , she was an adjunct librarian at two academic institutions in Westchester County, New York. In 1976 she began her career in libraries by first working as a children's librarian in the New Milford (CT) Public Library for 5 years. Then she became a public library director for two public libraries: North Salem (NY) Free Library and North Castle Public Library in Armonk , NY . Prior to receiving her MLS from The Palmer School of Library Science at Long Island University , she taught English in a public junior high school in Brookfield , CT and administered a high school dropout prevention program in Danbury , CT. One of her library science professors counseled her that she had the two best PRE-careers for becoming a librarian: teaching and social work. Experiences from both of those fields came in handy during her 30 years in libraries.
Danielle and her husband, Kurt, plan to visit as many independent bookstores in the US as possible (maybe even in Hawaii and Australia, too) where they plan to drink exotic coffees, listen to different accents and read as long as they want to in comfy chairs.

Research Request Leads to Multi-cultural Conference
In August 2005, the University of Akron 's Archives of the History of American Psychology (AHAP) received a research request to locate materials within the Abraham Maslow papers that are housed there. The request was made in order to research any existing materials that would shed further light upon the Blackfoot/Maslow connection, and an exchange of correspondence followed. From these exchanges a multi-cultural conference was born, and on September 5 th and 6 th , 2006, the Archives of the History of American Psychology presented a conference examining the influential role of the Blackfoot Indian culture on the work of Abraham Maslow. The conference also explored the elements of ethically responsible research among ethno-cultural populations, and was funded in part through grants from the American Psychological Association's Office of Ethnic Minority Affairs and the Ohio Humanities Council. For the Archives of the History of American Psychology the two-day event rallied support for a wider integration of contributions, concepts, theories, and models of traditionally under-represented groups in psychology.
