Looking for Rumplestiltskin …

Assuming you've read this far (old catalogers are always suspicious of how far anyone reads) . . . by the time you read this, your home institution is likely to be back full-time to the education business for the fall semester/quarter after a more leisurely summer of limited class offerings. We are used to it. We have done it for years: new sections of students for library instruction; new student workers to train; veteran student workers to welcome back; it is suddenly hard to cross Wooster St. in BG, Home or W. Main in Westerville, and sometimes even Beall Ave. or University in Wooster … it is always hard to cross High Street in Columbus, I guess.

Library doors are wide open physically and virtually providing access to local and remote resources in full-text, .pdf, .html, and other formats, while many of our ethereal resources and indexes are now available to patrons 24/7. OhioLINK is rolling out chat reference and our non-OhioLINK libraries are considering the LC/OCLC reference service. The fall is as busy as usual, perhaps a bit more frustrating and less rewarding. Too much to do, yes, but compounded by the lack of support from the state of Ohio requiring each of us to do more with less.

Not that vision is lacking. Governor Taft wants to turn Ohio into a high-tech magnet state through Ohio's colleges and universities, retaining Ohio's own graduates to lead its high-tech revolution. Great vision. No support. The presidents of our institutions face the intriguing prospect of spinning the straw of students and reduced budgets into Governor's gold, no Rumplestiltskin or other nefarious sorcerer/magician in sight. Oh, well …

In the meantime, I'm trying to plunge into the job of ALAO President, in addition to maintaining a semblance of control over two job titles I hold at BGSU. There doesn't seem to be much that truly prepares one for the ALAO job. I have been to several leadership retreats, attended many Board meetings, and have received the sage advice of those who have gone before me. I've even been prowling about the ALAO web site looking through the Manual, but it is a steep learning curve and I hope you will bear with me.

Among the many thanks I owe folks are the thank you's to the 2001-2002 Past President, Carolyn Radcliff (Kent State), President, Marcia Suter (Univ. of Toledo), and Gaynelle Predmore (BGSU) for organizing and conducting the outstanding ALAO Leadership Retreat this past June. This retreat was a shift from the focus of recent retreats on "annual reports" toward more teambuilding and problem solving. Though the Embassy Suites in Dublin was comfortable enough, they were unable to avoid taking a lightning strike that forced us to move from our meeting room to the atrium when the lights went out. Some of the best received portions of the meeting were Alison Ricker's (Oberlin) brief history of ALAO, an explanation of the ALAO organizational chart by Carolyn and Marcia and Karen Wilhoit's (Wright State) Power Point-less impromptu explanation of the proposed budget for 2002-2003.

At the end of the first day of the retreat, Carolyn, Marcia, and Kathy Wright of the Ohio College Association (OCA) sat me down for the "passing the torch" session from President Marcia Suter to me. They gave me tons of good information and advice and reminded me that one of my charges (conveniently forgotten during the election) is to oversee the revision of the ALAO Strategic Plan for 2002-2004 and some strategic objectives for aligning ALAO with the plan. We also discussed conducting a survey of the membership as a means of involving all ALAO in the process. The Budget and Planning Committee and the ALAO Board will be discussing the Strategic Plan at the Board meeting on September 12. I'll keep you informed by way of the ALAO listserv. If you're not already on the list, directions for signing up are on the web site (www.alaoweb.org/).

On the second day of the retreat, we held small group meetings to discuss ALAO's strengths and weaknesses and took a look at the 2001-2002 strategic objectives. Since it seemed from the "passing the torch" session it probably was my job, I brought the flip chart notes from the small groups back to BG and have since summarized them for the Board. In addition to providing lots of great ideas for the strategic plan and objectives, the small group discussions uncovered some problems that need to be addressed by the organization as well. I hope to have much more information for you to consider regarding ALAO strategic directions between now and our exciting 28th Annual Conference, November 1st.

Our Co-Webmasters, Aimée DeChambeau and Susan DiRenzo, both at Akron, have done a marvelous job keeping up our web presence. A lot of that lately has been their judicious organization and translation into HTML or .pdf of my sometimes organized, sometimes not, wishes, thoughts, or update requests. We quickly are becoming aware that our least expensive option in making information available to the ALAO membership is through the web site and through the ALAO listserv. These folks make inexpensive communication effective through their efforts and considerable web skills. I thank them for their leadership and their willingness to find time to devote to ALAO matters.

Back to Rumplestiltskin: Times are tough and first-born children don't seem to be commodities as easily bartered for library budgets as they were in the fairy tale for spinning straw into gold. Our Government Relations Team of Susan Scott and Ann Watson (both at Denison), and Cindy Kristof (Kent State) are dedicated to keeping us up on legislation impacting libraries. They are our leaders in making the case for academic libraries and higher education to our state legislators, our Senators, and Representatives in Washington. They can't do it all. It really is up to each and every one of us to interact as educators, voters, parents or citizens directly with our elected and appointed government officials. Any one of them can tell you how to contact your state and federal representatives. Susan Scott would be happy to have you as a member of the ALAO Legislative Advocate Network. I have to admit that I haven't been at all responsible in contacting my government folks in the past. I now feel that my best shot at influencing the future of higher education in Ohio is in making my opinion as a voter known to the state and federal folks I haven't been contacting regularly. I know it is not too late for me to start making myself known to them. I hope you will join me in this noble effort.

Annual Conference Update

The 2002 ALAO Program Planning Committee would like to extend an invitation to have you join us for the ALAO 28th Annual Conference, "Face to Face or Cyberspace - Redefining the Human Touch" on Friday, November 1, 2002 from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at Embassy Suites in the Cleveland suburb of Independence. The Embassy Suites is a beautiful establishment that has catered to our conference needs in a professional and timely fashion. The committee feels confident that this year's conference will be one that you will remember.

Joseph Janes, the founding director of the Internet Public Library and Assistant Professor at the Information School at the University of Washington, will be the keynote speaker for this year's conference. He is well-versed in the changing information environment. We look forward to an exciting keynote speech and a lively breakout session following his presentation.

This year's conference includes 25 programs and 9 poster sessions that will be presented by colleagues and associates from Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Arizona.

Conference topics will include:

  • maintaining the human touch in technology-based librarianship
  • supporting support staff
  • techniques for keeping up with the speed of change
  • managing the influx of data in the Information Age
  • using games in library instruction
  • user testing for library web sites
  • digital and internet reference
  • information literacy
  • online tools for cataloguers and cataloging electronic resources

I especially would like to encourage support staff to attend this year's conference. There are three programs that are being sponsored by the ALAO Support Staff Interest Group that are specifically geared towards supporting support staff.

The Diversity Committee will have a pre-conference, "Thinking Outside the Box as it Relates to Diversity in Organizations," to be held the day before the conference, on Thursday, October 31, 2002 from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. The presenter for this pre-conference will be Dr. Selina Griswold, Assistant Professor of Business Technologies at the University of Toledo.

The 2002 ALAO Program Planning Committee has done a great job in planning a conference for library support staff as well as librarians and information professionals interested in the different ways we are all handling the changing information environment, while including the human touch aspect. Applications Invited for Research Grant

The Research and Publications Committee invites applications for grants (up to $500), awarded in support of research projects. Grants must be related to issues in libraries or information science, and you must be an ALAO member to apply. Deadline for application is May 1, 2003. Grants are awarded in support of activities (e.g. organizing data, inter-library loan, travel, computer time, hiring of assistants, mailing costs, etc.). Both ongoing and new research projects can be considered. Proposals must state how the results are going to be disseminated. More information, instructions and application forms, and names of previous winners are available on the ALAO website, at: www.alaoweb.org/comsigs/respub.html. Applications will be evaluated by the Committee using a blind review process to guarantee anonymity. The winner will be notified by September 1, 2003. There is no award to announce for this year, since no applications were received in 2002.

Bibliography Update: The Research and Publication Committee maintains a bibliography of ALAO member publications, on the website, at www.alaoweb.org/comsigs/alaobibl.html. Please send us citations to your works published in the past five years (1998-2002) for inclusion in the bibliography. If possible, please send copies of your materials for display at the annual ALAO Conference on November 1st. (These will be returned upon request). Jay Ladd Distinguished Service Award: Call for Nominations

The ALAO Awards Committee is seeking nominations for the 2002 Jay Ladd Distinguished Service Award. This award recognizes an ALAO member, of at least 5 years, who has promoted academic libraries and librarianship not only on his or her own campus, but within the state as well. It also recognizes someone who has provided leadership in the promotion of ALAO through service such as committee membership, executive board office, or interest group office. The Jay Ladd Distinguished Service Award honors the memory of Jay Ladd who was among the founding members of ALAO in the early 1970s.

This is a wonderful way to recognize a colleague who has provided leadership in ALAO and in the profession. The recipient of this year's award will receive an honorary 5-year membership in ALAO and will be recognized at the 2002 ALAO Annual Conference, November 1, 2002, at the Embassy Suites in Independence, Ohio.

Curriculum Materials

Information Mining was the theme for the CMCIG spring workshop held May 10, 2002, at the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse in Columbus, Ohio. Marguerite Vandan Wyngaard, PhD., of the Ohio Department of Education's Office of Professional Development spoke on "Ohio's Entry Year Program for Educators." Dr. Patricia Hart, University of Dayton; Dr. Barbara Trube, Shawnee State and Sara Bushong, Bowling Green State University were presenters for an afternoon panel presentation focusing on curriculum materials center's relationship with teacher training institutions. Rick Lenkey, textbook sales representative from Glencoe/McGraw-Hill talked about obtaining complimentary textbooks from publishers and distributed current catalogs and promotional materials to participants.

The CMCIG is compiling a collaborative webliography of Praxis II preparation resources to post on the CMCIG web page. Initial efforts will focus on the Praxis II Principles of Learning and Teaching area. Ann Raney, past CMCIG chair, has agreed to continue coordinating this project. CMCIG Objectives for 2002-2003 include:

  • Review of the draft ALA Guidelines for Curriculum Materials Centers and determine if the CMCIG should send a letter of support
  • Continue collecting data for the Praxis II webliography project
  • Post initial Praxis II webliography on the web by November 1, 2002
  • Plan a session for the ALAO Annual Conference
  • Identify publisher(s) to speak at the 2003 Spring Workshop

I would like to extend my thanks and praise to Gaynelle Predmore (Bowling Green State University), the former Chair of SSIG. Gaynelle did an outstanding job as the Chair of SSIG and she did a great job orienting me in regards to the position at the ALAO Board Retreat in June. I think I was the only interest group chair who walked out with two notebooks containing vital information for me to do my interest group chair duties. I can only hope that I will do as great a job as Gaynelle did as last year's SSIG chair. Thanks for everything Gaynelle!

I would like to give a warm welcome to John Burke (Assistant Director of the Miami University Middletown campus library, effective September 1st), 2002/2004 Secretary/Chair-Elect. John is a great asset to the Support Staff Interest Group and has already had a chance to fill in during my absence at a recent SSIG Program Planning Committee. Thank you John. I look forward to working with you in the upcoming year.

This year's SSIG Program Planning Committee is hard at work planning an exciting and memorable Spring Workshop for Support Staff. A workshop theme that seems to be developing is motivation, which will encompass the roles of support staff and also the change in the roles that they fulfill. We hope to have a motivational keynote speaker in the morning followed by breakout sessions in the afternoon.

The committee thought it would be nice if we could have the SSIG workshop in the northern, central, and southern parts of Ohio so that support staff members at all academic and public institutions throughout the state would have an opportunity to attend a SSIG workshop. The committee is also exploring the possibility of having the regional library consortiums participate in the 2003 SSIG Workshop. Amanda Bowers from Ohio Valley Area Libraries who attended the August 9th Program Planning Committee said that OVAL is definitely going to collaborate with the SSIG for the spring workshop in 2003. There will be a meeting of all regional library consortiums on August 19th, so we will know of other consortium interest and/or collaboration after that meeting.

The sessions include: "Why Do We Do What We Do: Getting Involved Beyond and Above Your Job Description," presented by staff members from OSU-ATI, University of Akron, and Southern State Community College; "The Ohio Support Staff Institute (OSSI)," presented by John Burke; and "Supporting Support Staff: Providing the Human Touch to Our Co-Workers," presented by staff from Bowling Green State University, and Kent State University.

The SSIG also holds its annual meeting at the conference and will accept nominations for Secretary/Chair Elect for 2003/2005. The TSIG has a great program planned for the ALAO Annual Conference in November. Robert Freeborn from the Pennsylvania State University will be presenting "Cataloging Electronic Resources: What Copy Catalogers Need to Know About Revised Chapter 9." He will discuss the newly published Computer Files Chapter 9 from AACR2 using a presentation developed by an Online Audiovisual Catalogers (OLAC) task force. Changes in rules and LCRIs will be highlighted, examples of previous and current practice will be included, and suggestions for incorporation into current workflow will be discussed.

Another program features Brenda Block and Robert Bremer of OCLC outlining the evolution of OCLC's quality control processes and the procedures used for maintenance of WorldCat. Use of technology has resulted in an increase in the number of records changed while the number of quality control staff has decreased. Chief areas of attention include name and subject headings, duplicate records, and coding and tagging.

TSIG co-chairs for this year are Kevin Furniss of Denison (furniss@denison.edu) and Cynthia Whitacre of OCLC (whitacrc@oclc.org). We are planning on a spring workshop in 2003, with topics yet to be determined. Please contact either of us with your ideas or thoughts, as they are always welcome!

The most recent Chapter's Council meeting was held at ALA in Atlanta, June 16, 2002.

News items from that meeting and concerning ACRL in general:

  • Tyrone H. Cannon is the newly elected ACRL Vice-President, President elect. Mr. Cannon is currently the Library Dean at the University of San Francisco.
  • Helen Spaulding is the current ACRL president. Her theme for the year is New Realities, New Relationships. Ms. Spalding has been Associate Director of Libraries at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) since 1985.
  • ACRL's e-Learning Webcasts are available on demand. Individuals purchase two weeks of unlimited viewing; institutions purchase four weeks of access. See acrl.telusys.net/webcast/session.html for more information. (At Chapter's Council meeting in June we discussed the cost of the webcasts. Now, they are having a "sale" you might want to take advantage of.)
  • The latest ACRL Clip Note is Assessment in College Library Instruction Programs compiled by Lawrie H. Merz and Beth L. Mark.
  • For those who follow legislative issues, take a look at the ACRL's Washington Watch: www.ala.org/acrl/legalis.html.
  • Plan now for the 11th ACRL National Conference to be held in Charlotte, April 10-13, 2003. See www.ala.org/acrl/charlotte/. Scholarships to provide opportunities for librarians with five or fewer years of experience to update their skills and knowledge by participating in an ACRL professional development experience are available to attend this conference. Fifty awards consisting of complimentary registrations and $250 cash for travel expenses will be given to librarians. Application deadline is October 15, 2002. Greetings from your new membership chair! Please remember to stop by the Membership Table at the Annual Conference in November - I am looking forward to meeting many membership liaisons and new members there. If there is anything in particular that members would like to see at the membership table, just let me know. Of course we will carry on Betsy's candy bowl tradition.

Our current membership is 533, with 57 new members joining between Jan and May 2002, and 6 new members joining between June and August. 145 memberships from 2001 have expired. I therefore challenge each of you to ask 3 colleagues if they have renewed their ALAO membership, and if they have not to encourage them to do so! A new listserv, ALAOMEM-L, has been created for membership liaisons. Bowling Green State University
A press conference announcing the completion of the Toledo Diocese Microfilm Preservation Project by the Center for Archival Collections at Bowling Green State University was held in Jerome Library on Thursday, August 15, 2002. This two-year collaborative project culminated in the preservation of sacramental records for 204 Northwest Ohio parishes, missions and stations, and 7 Catholic hospitals.

David Powell has joined the John W. Dickhaut Library staff as their new Acquisitions Assistant. David has a Master's of Theological Studies from Trinity Lutheran Seminary and will be starting at Kent State's MLS program on the OSU campus this Fall.

Sylvia Hu and Demitria Patrick are new Minority Resident Librarians. Cynthia Mader is the new Physical Sciences Librarian. Frances Yates is the new Education Librarian. Rob Withers, Rob Casson, and Aaron Shrimplin co-authored an article on creating web-based listings of e-journals which will appear in Library Cataloging, Acquisitions, and Techical Services. Rob Withers completed the Library Leadership 2002 workshop.

Mount Vernon Nazarene University
Mount Vernon Nazarene College became "Mount Vernon Nazarene University," on August 1, 2002. They have over eighty academic programs, including professional and masters level studies, and a student body of over 2,200.

Muskingum College
Two librarians are joining the staff at Muskingum College. They are Marni Chidsey, Reference and Web Resources Librarian and Mary Williams, Serials and Government Documents Librarian.

In other news from Muskingum, Sheila Elleberger has completed an Ed.D. program at Nova Southeastern University, graduating in June 2002. Her area of study is Instructional Technology and Distance Education. Congratulations Sheila!

Oberlin College
Maria Paz Esguerra begin a one-year appointment as the Library Diversity Associate. Maria Paz graduated from Oberlin in May 2002, and participated as an undergraduate fellow in the IMLS-funded Library Diversity Program. She helped to present information on that program at the 2001 ALAO Conference, as part of a panel session and poster session. As the Diversity Associate, Maria Paz will help coordinate the program for the 2002/03 undergraduate fellows.

Ohio Dominican University
Abbie Basile is the new Reference and Instruction Services Librarian; Mary Ellen George is assuming the new Collection Services Librarian position; and Janet Bush is assuming a new full-time Technical Assistant position. Ohio Dominican has also hired two part-time staff people: Katie Kasper as Periodicals Assistant, and Cindi Stewart as their new Office Manager.

University of Dayton
Roesch Library has three new hires: Tina Powell is the Administrative Associate for Business Affairs; Sherry Sapier joins the Roesch staff as Electronic Reserve & Circulation Assistant; and Emily Hicks is the new Head of the Bibliographic Management Department.

Communications Review Board

The Communications Review Board met September 6th at Ohio Wesleyan to discuss issues relating to the ALAO Newsletter, Listserv, and the Website version of the Procedures Manual.

Newsletter: The central issue under discussion for the Newsletter focused on continuing a print version of the newsletter, combinations of print and electronic versions, or moving to only electronic versions of each issue. The Review Board was evenly split on the issue and elected to issue the September 2002 newsletter in electronic format (HTML and PDF) and a "highlights" print issue. The highlights issue features an overview of the reports in the complete version, plus People and Library News, and the URL to the HTML and PDF versions of the newsletter:

Listserv: Co-Webmasters, Aimee DeChambeau and Susan Direnzo are investigating the possibility of moving the listserv from Devry. They are looking into using the Clearlight service or finding another member institution to host the list so that we will have more control over operation of the list.

Website and the Procedures Manual: Procedure Manual updates will all go through the Manual Revision Coordinator before being passed on to the Co-Webmasters. The Review Board also recommended the creation of a style guide for the web version of the Procedures Manual to ensure consistency in the look of the pages.

The ALAO Newsletter is published four times a year by the Academic Library Association of Ohio, in September, December, March, and June. It is made available as a benefit of membership. The purpose of the ALAO Newsletter is to advance the goals of the organization and serve the memberbship.
