2001 JAY LADD DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD NOMINATIONS DUE

Carolyn Radcliff, Past President
Kent State University

The ALAO Awards Committee is seeking nominations for the 2001 Jay Ladd Distinguished Service Award. This award recognizes an ALAO member, of at least 5 years, who has promoted academic libraries and librarianship not only on her or his own campus, but within the state as well. It also recognizes someone who has provided leadership in the promotion of ALAO through service such as committee membership, executive board office, or interest group office.

The ALAO Distinguished Service Award was renamed the Jay Ladd Distinguished Service Award in 1998 to honor the memory of Jay Ladd, 1932-1997, who was among the founding members of ALAO in the early 1970s.

Past recipients of this award include:

1984 Virginia Tiefel 1993 Ann Allan
1985 Hannah McCauley 1994 Kathy Wright
1986 Marian Winner 1995 Julie Houston
1987 Martha Laury 1996 Susan Phillips
1988 Charles Maurer 1997 Sara Bushong
1989 Jay Ladd 1998 Margy Kramer
1990 Sr. Deborah Harmeling 1999 Greg Pronevitz
1991 Linda Landis 2000 Pat Walker
1992 Peri Switzer

This is a wonderful way to recognize a colleague who has provided leadership in ALAO and in the profession. The award recipient will receive an honorary 5-year membership in ALAO and will be recognized at the 2001 ALAO Annual Conference to be held October 26 at Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio.

The deadline for nominations is October 1, 2001. You may print and fill out the nomination form from the Web or send me the following information:

(1) name of nominee, (2) nominee's position title, (3) nominee's college or university, (4) nominee's ALAO activities, and (5) your reasons for nominating this person. NOTE: You may nominate more than one person.

ACRL CHAPTERS COUNCIL REPORT

ALA Annual Conference
San Francisco, June 2001
Pat Walker, Liaison to ACRL
Wright State University

Evelyn Minick, Chair of the ACRL Chapters Council, welcomed chapter representatives and presided over the following reports and activities:

ACRL Leadership
Betsy Wilson, ACRL President, announced a major change of leadership for the association: After ten years at the helm, ACRL Executive Director Althea Jenkins will be leaving to direct the Florida State University libraries and replacing her, effective August 1, 2001, will be veteran Senior Associate Director, Mary Ellen Davis. Wilson also briefly discussed the current review underway to evaluate the effectiveness of the Initiative Fund program, originally designed to implement the ACRL strategic plan at the local level.

Past-president Larry Hardesty alerted chapter leaders to the upcoming request for program proposals for the 2003 ACRL national conference in Charlotte, North Carolina. President-Elect Mary Reichel announced the theme for her term would be "Learning Communities for Excellence in Higher Education," and newly elected President-Elect, Helen Spaulding, talked briefly about planning for her president's program in Toronto 2003, tentatively titled, "New Realities, New Relationships".

ALA Midwinter Scheduling
The ALA Conference Committee is considering shortening the midwinter schedule by one day. Realizing that more committees are using technology to facilitate ongoing work between meetings, the Conference Committee is soliciting feedback for a late Friday afternoon to Monday afternoon schedule. Chapter leaders were asked to comment on the impact on committee work/meetings with such a schedule change.

Legislative Update
Carol Ashworth, UCITA Coordinator from the ALA Washington Office, reported that UCITA was not expected to pass in any state during 2001 but is expected to come back with a vengeance in 2002. Pat Walker, ACRL Legislative Network Coordinator, reported about developments with efforts to increase the LSTA appropriation, the progress of the E-Government bill (S.803), and the passage in the House of the TEACH bill (S.487) to extend fair use into modern Web-based distance education.

Chapters Council Election
Former ALAO president, Sherri Edwards (now at the University Of Notre Dame) was elected Vice Chair/Chair-Elect of Chapters Council, and Tom Dodge, Auburn University, was elected Secretary. Congratulations Sherri!

GOVERNMENT RELATIONS TEAM: NEWS AND CHANGES

Susan Collins, Govt. Relations Team
Ohio University - Lancaster

Statehouse Connect Day was held on May 16, 10am-3: 00pm, in Columbus. Thirteen ALAO members attended, and all felt that it was a worthwhile experience. Robert Hickey, Assistant Vice President for Public Affairs at Wright State University, spoke on various ways of effectively communicating with legislators. Tom Sanville spoke about OhioLINK funding issues and the Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act. Participants visited with 12 legislators and their aides during the afternoon, primarily to thank them for OhioLINK and to advise them about upcoming legislation to protect Ohio citizens from the effects of UCITA laws enacted by other states.

As most of you know, I retired as of June 30 from Ohio University-Lancaster and resigned as a member of ALAO's Government Relations Team. It has been my privilege to serve ALAO in many capacities during my almost 20-year membership, and supporting our profession as a legislative advocate has been one of my most important contributions. Please continue to support strong advocacy goals and programs within our organization, and I wish you all the best. Susan Collins (new email address: susiecollins@adelphia.net)

Note: Replacing Susan Collins on the Government Relations Team is Susan Scott from Denison University. Please contact Susan (scott@denison.edu) or Pat Walker (pat.walker@wright.edu) to find out how you can participate in this important work.
