HUMAN DIVERSITY INTEREST GROUP - PROPOSAL FOR A STANDING COMMITTEE

REPORT: Ohio Council of Library and Information Service (OCLIS) Conference

Mary Konkel, President

I was pleased to represent ALAO at the OCLIS Conference "PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER," held June 18-19 at the Fawcett Center on the campus of Ohio State University. OCLIS's mission "to facilitate communications and cooperation among librarians and organizations in Ohio" was carried out as representatives from many of the OCLIS organizations came together to report on collaborative ventures, explore communication avenues and articulate shared visions.

Dr. Linda Dobb, Dean of Bowling GreenUniversity was the evening's keynote speaker. Dr. Dobb's remarks addressed the many faces of collaboration including cooperation, consortia, coalition, partnerships and mergers. We choose to collaborate to provide better service, gain more resources, attract new users and leverage new support. However, Dr. Dobb noted that collaborations may also cause a loss of identity and control as concessions are made in support of the group rather than the individual members. She encouraged us to leap into the unknown and seek partners who 1) share a like enthusiasm for library services and skills, 2) are willing to learn new things, 3) have the ability to participate fully and reap mutual benefits, 4) have growth potential, and 5) can compromise when necessary.

Visions of the future were presented the following day: technology/networks, personnel sharing, resource sharing, professional development, and collaboration with government and the private sector were all covered. Participants chose two workgroup sessions on the above topics. The workgroups discussed ways in which different types of libraries can collaborate to achieve the visions presented in these opening sessions.

The conference wrap-up included a reporting session on the workgroups and a synthesis of the conference by John N. Berry, editor-in-chief of Library Journal, a colorful capstone to the conference.

NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

Some things happen every year like clock work: students return to campus, leaves begin to fall and ALAO seeks nominations for its Distinguished Service Award.

The award recognizes an ALAO member who has promoted academic libraries and librarianship not only on their own campus, but within the state as well and/or provided leadership in ALAO. Anyone may nominate any individual who has been an ALAO member for at least five years.

Take a minute to think about who invited you to join ALAO. Or think of Ohio librarians you have seen at the forefront of our profession. Then write your letter of nomination including nominee's name, title, place of work, address, ALAO activities, and reason for nomination. Also provide your name, institutional affiliation if applicable and phone number.

Nominations must be received by October 1, 1997 by Julie McDaniel, 3629 N. Ludlow Road, Urbana, OH 430789510; email : library2@erinet.com; fax (937) 328-9006. The Distinguished Service Award winner will receive the award at the Annual Conference.

CURRICULUM MATERIALS CENTER INTEREST GROUP NEWS

Welcome to the CMCIG, as we begin another year. The Curriculum Materials Center Interest Group provides an opportunity at a statewide level for curriculum materials center personnel to meet and discuss ideas and information relevant to the profession. The CMCIG is comprised of those ALAO members who have expressed an interest in curriculum materials and related issues. By sharing ideas, addressing mutual issues of concern, providing for networking between CMCs throughout Ohio and beyond, the CMCIG goes a long way in strengthening the profession of librarianship.

Fall Business Meeting:

We will hold our fall business meeting on October 31, during the 11-11:50am session of the ALAO Annual Conference at the Fawcett Center in Columbus, Ohio. I welcome your suggestions for agenda items.

Spring Workshop: The University of Dayton is the site for CMCIG Spring Workshop; date and time of that workshop are still being determined. CMCIG chair elect Steve Aby and I encourage you to contact us if you have any questions, ideas, concerns regarding these upcoming meetings or suggestions for important issues that should be discussed. HUMAN DIVERSITY INTEREST GROUP - PROPOSAL FOR A STANDING COMMITTEE

During the Annual Leadership Retreat HDIG Chair Gladys Smiley Bell submitted to the ALAO Board a suggestion to recreate the HDIG as a standing committee of the board. The group's past experience provides evidence that there must be a broader and more authoritative base of commitment in order to fulfill the current purpose, goals and objectives of the HDIG. Diversity should be an integral part of the entire organization, and a standing committee of the organization reflects this better than an interest group.

There was widespread support for the suggestion at the retreat, and all agreed that a draft proposal should be prepared for presentation at the September ALAO Board meeting. This draft will also be presented to members of the interest group for their review at the Annual Conference on October 31. These two discussions should yield a final draft proposal for the February board meeting.

This suggestion was given in the hope that ALAO's commitment to diversity will continue to be a top priority. Your best opportunity for input in the discussion will be during the interest group meeting during the 11-11:50am session of the conference. A copy of the initial proposal is also available on the ALAO Web site, and you may send your response, questions, or concerns online (../../). We hope to have a very lively discussion and a larger support base for the proposal and the change.

We look forward to your input, and strongly encourage you to attend the meeting and share your input in person. Contact us directly if you prefer: Gladys Smiley Bell (gbell@kentvm.kent.edu, 330/672-3045 ext.44) or Mary G. Wrighten (mwright@bgnet.bgsu.edu, 419/372-7897).
