ALAO SSIG PROGRAM PLANNING COMMITTEE
MEETING MINUTES
SEPTEMBER 8, 2000
Present: Mary Ayres [Southern State], Lynne Downes [University of Toledo], Karen Ketchaver [John Carroll Univ.], Martha Kluth [Univ. of Akron], Michael Ludle [Methodist Theological School], Gaynelle Predmore [Bowling Green State Univ.], Joy Ramos [Univ. of Akron], & Gail Richmond [Bowling Green State Univ.]
- 1. ALAO SSIG Pre-Conference:
- Mary reported that the final cost for the Pre-Conference will be $35 per person. Registration is being taken care of by ALAOJeanne Langendorfer at BGSU will be receiving registrations. Receipts will be included in folders.
- Lynne shared a copy of the ALAO flyer. Pre-Conference flyer is being included with the mailing of the ALAO Annual Conference Flyers.
- Gail is putting together folders for Pre-Conference. Materials, approximately 100 copies of each, need be sent to her by October 18. Lynne may pick up folders from Sherry Edwards at next meeting or Gail will get via Courier.
- Karen, Joy, and Michael will work on evaluation form
- Gaynelle is working on the networking session.
- Martha and Karen will staff the registration table.
- Mary will take care of sending a letter to Marcia King-Blandford verifying her participation and getting information from her about room set up, etc.
- Mary also will be conducting the Business Meeting. Committee reports and/or requests can also be given. Mary will formulate the agenda. Nominations for Secretary/Chair-elect will be taken at this meeting.
- Martha, Michael, Gail, and Gaynelle will distribute information about the Pre-Conference to various lists. Not certain as to what has happened to the list that Doug Morrison had while at Wayne College. We’ll need to check with him as to who is running or if it is still functioning.
- 2. ALAO Annual Conference:
- SSIG will share half of an information table. Mary, Gail, & Gaynelle will staff this table. Suggestions for items to have available at the table included: SSIG History, Spring Workshop Information, Sign-up Sheet for Involvement/Volunteers, possible freebies, etc. Lynne offered use of display unit.
- SSIG session is titled: Applying New Thinking to Old Problems: Creative Problem Solving. Need to have some advance preparation of problems that have been solved that can be shared in addition to doing some discussion of problem solving. Two suggestions given included cross training of student assistants & successful ways of dealing with vendor problems. Mary will contact Doug Morrison to see if he might be interested in facilitating. Michael volunteered to assist with this session. Timing of session still to be determined by ALAO Program Planning Committee.
- 3. GCLC Conference:
- Mary mentioned that the GCLC [Greater Cincinnati Library Consortium] is holding a conference October 4 that she will be attending. For more details see: GCLC@GCLC-lib.org.
- 4. Spring Workshops Pre-Planning/Brainstorming:
- It was agreed that April was the best time for these workshops. Possible dates of these workshops are April 19 & 20; April 26 & 27; April 5 & 6; or May 3 & 4.
- Locations need to have adequate parking, ease in getting to, food service available, & meeting facilities for at least 100 attendees. Some suggestions given for northern part of state were: Kent State University or Der Dutchman at Mansfield Martha & Joy will be checking these out. For southern part of state: a larger room at Raymond Walters College or Southern StateMary will be checking out these sites.
- Some possible speakers/topics were discussed. Speakers included: Herb Cihak and Staff that spoke last year at annual ALAO Conference, Rush Miller [formerly at BGSU], Linda Dobb [BGSU], Margaret Barron from CCC/COLT, Richard Levy from OWU, Patrick Donadio - Karen will investigate further information about Mr. Donadio as he did programs for CAMLS that she attended. Topics included: How Support Staff is Treated, Doesn’t Our Work Count for Something, Comparison of Vendors/info fair, Ergonomics, Stress Reduction etc. Gaynelle inquired if ever support staff from around the state might be interested in presenting sessionswe could inquire at our own institutions for starters to see if there might be someone interested.
Next scheduled meeting for ALAO SSIG is October 20, 2000, at Ohio Wesleyan at 10:30. Watch e-mail for details or if this meeting will be necessary.
