What does the future hold for Ohio libraries?

Come peer into our crystal ball as we explore these topics:

• Establishing and Maintaining an eReader Collection (presentation by Sue Polanka, Head of Reference & Instruction, Wright State University)

• eReaders for Kids (facilitated by Kathy Yoder, Education Librarian, Bowling Green State University)
• Grade School eTextbooks in the CMC (facilitated by Ann Raney, CMC Director, University of Dayton)
• Beverly Cain, the State Librarian, will give us an overview of what's happening in Ohio's school libraries.

• We will round out the day with a tour of the State Library of Ohio and the Ohioanna Collection.

8:30- 9:00 -- Registration and continental breakfast

9:00-10:00 -- Establishing & Maintaining an eReader Collection, presented by Sue Polanka, Wright State University

Approximately 15-17% of academic and school libraries are lending dReaders to their patrons. There are a variety of ways to establish this service in a library. During this session, the nuts and bolts of establishing and maintaining an eReader collection will be discussed and demonstrated. Device selection, collection development, purchasing, policies and procedures, and budgeting will be discussed and debated.

10:15-11:15 -- Managing eBooks for Kids, facilitated by Kathy Yoder, Bowling Green State University

As academic libraries grapple with presenting electronic content to their patrons, curriculum materials centers also want to serve pre-service teachers with children's eBooks from a variety of publishers. In this session we will take a look at what we want and need from an eBook platform: MARC records, unlimited access, affordability and more. Guest Lindsey Newman will demonstrate one such product, Mackin VIA, and Kathy Yoder will share her search for a children's portal that meets the needs of an academic setting.

11:15-12:00 -- PreK-12 eTextbooks in Ohio CMCs, facilitated by Ann Raney, University of Dayton

With the release of the new "Digital Textbook Playbook" by the Federal Communications Commission and the U.S. Department of Education to help advance the federal government's initiative to bring digital textbooks to all American students within the next five years, it is imperative that our collections begin the transition from print to digital format. During this session, PreK-12 textbook representatives will share their digital textbook options.

1:00-1:30 -- Tour of the State Library

Learn about the services and offerings of the State Library of Ohio, a state agency that serves state government and all types of libraries.

1:30-2:00 -- The State of Ohio's Libraries, presented by Beverly Cain, State Library of Ohio

Ohio's school libraries are at a crossroads. State Librarian Cain will share information that has been gathered about them by the Working Together to Support Ohio's Libraries Committee.

2:00-2:45 -- Tour of the Ohioanna Library

CMCIG Purpose, Goals and Objectives

Purpose

The purpose of the Curriculum Materials Center Interest Group is to provide opportunity at a statewide level for CMC personnel to meet and exchange information.

Goals

The following goals are addressed by the CMCIG:

• To address mutual issues or problems related to Curriculum Materials Centers that can be discussed in a group setting for the purpose of generating ideas and solutions.
• To share ideas and information regarding Curriculum Materials Centers by sponsoring or co-sponsoring programs and workshop.
• To provide opportunity for networking between CMC's through the publication of a directory of Curriculum Materials Centers.
• To promote the interests of CMC and CMC personnel through contributions to the ALAO Newsletter.
• To support continued professional development of CMC personnel to insure high standards of service to education programs in the state (Ohio).

Objectives

To be determined annually by the Chair of the Interest Group in consultation with Members.

Membership

The Interest Group will consist of ALAO members who have expressed an interest in curriculum materials. The Chair will be elected each spring from the Membership.
